9 Causes of Snoring and Sleep Apnoea in Kids

12 percent of children snore whereas another 2 percent suffer from sleep apnoea. Obstruction of the airways is often a major cause of sleep apnoea and snoring.  Other causes are:

  1. Inhaling smoke and other foreign particles.
  2. Allergic reactions such as to certain foods, pollen and dust may lead to obstructed airways.

iii.            Throat infections

  1. Tonsillitis may block the upper airways.
  2. Epiglottitis hinders airflow to the lungs.
  3. Bronchitis

vii.            Enlarged adenoids make it hard to breathe.

viii.            Infections such as viral and bacterial infections may cause snoring as well as injuries.

  1. Asthma causes inflammation of the airways restricting airflow.

When snoring and sleep apnoea are left undiagnosed and untreated, they may lead to far reaching health consequences e.g. compromised growth in children.
