Hookah Smokers: Even Light Use Causes Lung Abnormalities

indiaHookah smoking, common in the Middle East, is rising in popularity in the US among young people. Research into the effects and safety of hookah has however been limited.

A study by the American Thoracic Society shows that one session of hookah smoking will produce smoke that is equivalent to that of 125 cigarettes. The findings come in the face of a common misconception that hookah smoking is less harmful than cigarette smoking.

The study reveals that the same health risks as those of cigarette smoking are common in hookah smokers. Light use of the hookah also called the water pipe leads to lung function abnormalities.
