Is Your Bad Breath a Sign of Bad Health?

brusing teethWhen assessing the cause of bad breath, the Mayo Clinic recommends that we have a look at the basics. Oral hygiene is dependent on brushing, flossing and rinsing the teeth on a regular basis.

Bad breath may persist even with these good oral hygiene behaviors. It could be an indication of underlying health problems. Some obvious causes of bad breath are:

i            Changing diet to coffee and garlic will cause bad breath.

ii            Presence of dental appliances in the mouth such as retainers and dentures.

iii            Failure to brush the tongue.

The health problems that cause bad breath include;

  • Diabetes ketoacidosis
  • Tonsil stones and tonsillitis
  • Chronic kidney failure
  • Late stage liver failure.
  • Chronic inflammation of the sinus or throat.
