Macho men are less likely to visit a doctor. Even if they do, they are more likely to request male physicians when they do make an appointment.
Researchers have found that these men will downplay their disease state or symptoms when they see the doctor. The problem is more magnified when they are to see a male doctor in an attempt to keep the strong front.
According to Mary Himmelstein, a co-author, masculinity is associated with poor health outcomes. Masculinity will lead men not to seek preventative care and to delay curative care in the face of injury or illness.
