Going To a Rock Concert? Remember To Take Your Earplugs

music rockA random controlled trial of 51 volunteers recruited through social media and asked to attend an outdoor music festival in Amsterdam aimed to check for hearing loss. About half were made to wear earplugs whereas the other half did not wear the earplugs. An audiogram was then used to measure temporary threshold shift and level of hearing loss.

The researchers found that temporary hearing loss in the group that wore earplugs was 8 percent whereas it was at 42 percent of the group didn’t wear earplugs. Their conclusions were that wearing earplugs in events can reduce or prevent both temporary hearing loss and tinnitus.
