Simple List of Seven Predictors Helps Screen Patients at Risk of COPD

chest painChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition characterized by shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing up large amounts of mucus. COPD is ranked as the number three cause of death in the US.

A clinical trial carried out in four Latin American countries indicates that a simple seven-item list of predictive factors for COPD is an effective tool for screening COPD. It will help doctors to identify high-risk patients even when they are not experiencing symptoms.

The seven-item screening tool was dependent on the following seven factors: pack-years smoking, breathlessness, sputum, gender, age, cough and previous spirometry tests. The tool correctly predicted the spirometry test results that put patients in the COPD category 76 percent of the time.
