Sleep Apnoea May Raise Heart Risks in These People

man standingNew research suggests that people who have had pacemakers inserted and had sleep apnoea were at greater risk of atrial fibrillation, a dangerous heart rhythm disorder. The risk of atrial fibrillation was three times greater in severe sleep apnoea.

Previously, it was known that sleep apnoea was a risk factor for atrial fibrillation but little was known about the risk of atrial fibrillation in people with pacemakers and who had sleep apnoea.

Dr. Andrea Mazza, from Santa Maria della Stella Hospital in Italy, says that pacemakers are now equipped with sleep apnoea monitoring tools to identify those pacemaker patients with sleep apnoea and are at risk of atrial fibrillation.
