Most times a rotten tonsil is caused by inflammation and tonsil stones, leading to sore throats and bad breath. However, although rare, tonsil cancer is on the rise, driven by an increase in HPV (wart virus) infection of the mouth and throat. This is what a tonsil cancer can look like:
