Tonsil stones form in cracks, holes and crevices that run through the tonsils. They are basically food and salivary debris which becomes trapped, then rots.

This crevice on the right tonsil is the site of deep tonsil stone formation. Part of its tell-tale is salivary bubbles that stream out of it.
