There are 7 main indicators for removal of the tonsils, whether partial, subtotal or total. They are:

1) recurrent tonsil stones

2) bad breath and taste

3) recurrent acute tonsillitis

4) chronic tonsillitis with chronic fatigue

5) snoring and sleep apnoea

6) tonsil cancer

7) guttate psoriasis

Total techniques (Extra capsular) such as traditional tonsillectomy with diathermy are associated with prolonged severe pain and bleeding.

Subtotal techniques (Intra capsular) can be performed using local anaesthetic spray and a vapourising laser as a lunchtime technique, though more than one treatment can be required.
